Wang Yang, born in Hanchuan, Hubei in 1984, is the 2018 national individual champion, long known before that title as one of the strongest players never to have won it - the 'uncrowned king'. Named a grandmaster in 2010, he also took rapid gold at the 2008 World Mind Sports Games.
His chess was steady and refined, built on precise calculation, which won him the name 'Pale-faced Scholar'. He was a mainstay of the Hubei team. The game here shows that crisp, exact style against a fellow champion.

Wang Yang, the powerful Hubei grandmaster and later national champion, takes red against Yu Youhua at the individual championship. A crisp attacking game from one of the hardest hitters of his generation.
A soldier falls on move fifteen and the game explodes in the forties - seven captures in ten moves. When it settles Wang has an extra chariot and drives a cannon home for the finishing check. Black is left with almost nothing. Direct, powerful chess.
