The player
Zhang Guofeng, born in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu in 1975, is the 2001 women’s national individual champion and a two-time Asian champion, named a grandmaster in 2001. For years she was the top scorer of the Jiangsu women’s team across its seven national team titles.
Her chess was brave and aggressive - the chess world called her 'the Beauty Killer' for the ferocity of her attacks. At the 1998 national masters tournament she famously beat four male masters to finish eighth overall.
The games here show that attacking verve against the strongest women players of her generation.
Zhang Guofeng - Wang Linna, 2003
2003 National Individual Championship, round 8 · 2003 · Zhang Guofeng (red) vs Wang Linna (black)
The return match: Zhang Guofeng, herself a women’s national champion, takes red against Wang Linna three years on. The same great rivalry, the colours reversed.
The soldiers clash early, on move sixteen, and six captures follow in ten moves. Zhang keeps two cannons and the sounder structure, and grinds out the win inside sixty-seven plies. Proof that this rivalry ran both ways.
