The player

Hu Ming, born in Shijiazhuang, Hebei in 1971, is one of the greatest women players China has produced - a six-time women’s national individual champion whose five straight titles from 1990 to 1994 remain an unmatched streak in the event. She won her first at fifteen, in 1986, and was a two-time women’s world champion.

One of the first women to be named a grandmaster, she became the first woman in history to complete the 'grand slam' of world, Asian and national titles. She later served as a vice-president of the Hebei Chess Institute while still competing.

The games here catch her at the height of her dominance in the early 1990s.

Hu Ming - Wang Linna, 1994

1994 National Individual Championship · 1994 · Wang Linna (red) vs Hu Ming (black)

Hu Ming, the dominant women’s champion of the early 1990s and one of the first women to earn the grandmaster title, takes Black against Wang Linna. A patient, technical win from one of the finest women players China has produced.

A chariot takes the first soldier on move thirteen, but the decisive stretch comes late - four captures in ten moves around move fifty - and Hu keeps the extra soldier that wins the ending. Control from first move to last.
