The player
胡明 (Hu Ming) was born in Shenze, Hebei, on 21 July 1971, and her coach was 刘殿中 (Liu Dianzhong). She won the women's national individual championship in 1986, at fifteen, and was runner-up for the next three years. From 1990 to 1994 she won it five years running, six titles in all. She received the women's grandmaster title in 1990, won the world women's championship in 1991 and 1993, and took the Asian individual title in 1994. She was the first woman to hold the world, Asian and national titles, and in 1995 she became a vice-president of the new Hebei chess institute.

Hu Ming, the dominant women's champion of the early 1990s and one of the first women to earn the grandmaster title, has Black against Wang Linna. It is a hard-fought win from one of the finest women players China has produced.
Red's chariot takes the first soldier on move seven, but the game is decided late. Around move twenty-eight come four captures in ten plies: Red takes both of Black's advisors, and a pair of chariots comes off. Hu Ming plays on without advisors, and her chariot, horse and cannon close in on Red's general. At the end Red still has both advisors and Black has none, yet it is Wang Linna who resigns.
