Zhao Guanfang, born in Handan, Hebei in 1983, is the 2005 women’s national individual champion and an Asian women’s individual champion, part of the strong Handan chess lineage that also produced Hu Ming and You Yingqin. She later headlined the Shandong team in the women’s national league.

The game here is the longest in this whole collection - a 134-move marathon - and a fine display of the endurance and technique that took her to the national title.

Zhao Guanfang - Zhang Guofeng, 2000

2000 National Individual Championship · 2000 · Zhang Guofeng (red) vs Zhao Guanfang (black)

Zhao Guanfang, the strong Jiangsu player, takes Black against Zhang Guofeng in the longest game in this collection - 134 plies. A marathon, and a triumph of endurance.

A chariot takes the first soldier on move thirteen, the sharp play comes early around move twenty, and then the two settle into an enormous ending. Zhao keeps a horse and two elephants against a bare chariot and, after seventy patient moves, delivers the finishing check. Stamina rewarded.
