Sun Yongzheng, the Shanghai player who went on to win the national title in 2011, has Red against Lü Qin at the 2001 individual championship. It is a long, ambitious game from a player on the rise.
Sun takes the first soldier on move eight, and the sharpest fighting comes around move twenty. He keeps his two cannons pressing on the black position and strips Lü Qin's defence bare, and by move 56 there is nothing left to hold. It was a big win over one of the legends of the game.

Sun Yongzheng has Black against Zhao Guorong in a short, violent game of forty-five plies. When both players go all out in a Central Cannon fight, the margins are thin.
The exchanges start on move ten and do not stop: five more captures follow in the next ten moves. Sun comes out of them with two chariots against one, and Zhao, with less material and no attack, resigns. A quick loss like this was rare for Zhao, one of the steadiest champions of his time.
