Liu Dianzhong, born in Tangshan, Hebei in 1948, is one of the founding figures of Hebei xiangqi - a grandmaster named in 1998 on the strength of a long run of top finishes at the national championship, where his best results were a runner-up and a third place across a career that stretched from the 1960s into his fifties.
He is remembered as much for his coaching as his play: a national-level trainer credited with developing multiple grandmasters and masters, and a long-serving administrator of Hebei chess. The game here shows the craftsman who could still beat the very best deep into his career.
