The player
Jin Haiying, born in Linhai, Zhejiang in 1978, is the 1998 women’s national individual champion and the 1999 women’s world champion, an international grandmaster who completed the world, Asian and national 'grand slam' with her 2002 Asian title.
She is also the most highly educated professional the game has known: she earned a master’s degree in Chinese literature from Peking University and wrote the book 'Teaching Chess at Peking University'. She now coaches the Zhejiang women’s team.

Jin Haiying, the strong Beijing grandmaster, takes red against former champion Hu Ming - a meeting of two of the women’s game’s leading lights. A commanding attacking display.
A soldier falls on move twenty-three and the game opens with seven captures in ten moves in the late thirties. Jin strips Hu Ming’s position bare - by the end Black has only a chariot and two elephants left - and wraps it up. Overwhelming, from a player who rarely gets her due.
