The player

Gao Hua, born in Bozhou, Anhui in 1949, is the 1985 women’s national individual champion and the 1986 Asian Cup women’s individual champion, named a grandmaster in 1985. She was a genuine pioneer: with no women’s championship yet in existence, she competed in men’s events - the only woman among the 86 players at the 1974 national tournament, and a member of the Anhui men’s team.

She played for Anhui across a long career and was later certified as a national-level arbiter. The game here shows the deeply prepared, technical style of one of the women’s game’s founding champions.

Gao Hua - Wang Linna, 1998

1998 National Individual Championship · 1998 · Gao Hua (red) vs Wang Linna (black)

Gao Hua takes red against Wang Linna in a deeply theoretical Central Cannon - fifteen moves of main-line book - at the individual championship. A patient, well-prepared win.

The book runs long, first blood a cannon taking a soldier on move twenty-two, and the sharpest play comes in the forties. Gao keeps two chariots and two horses and the better coordination, and converts. Preparation and technique in equal measure.
